GungHo sells Octopath Traveler dev ACQUIRE, new parent hopes to “generate synergies” with its studios

GungHo Online Entertainment has sold ACQUIRE Corp. to Kadokawa Corporation, meaning the studio is now under the same parent as the likes of fellow Japanese devs Spike Chunsoft and FromSoftware. It might have just been acquired, but it’s already worked closely with Kadokawa’s studios in the past.

Kadokawa’s recent financial report notes that it’s acquired the studio and hopes to “generate synergies” across its existing properties. It’s also a wholly-owned subsidiary. We assume, on top of its own IPs, it will also have its hands in co-developing more games from its parent’s studios.

While we largely know ACQUIRE because of co-developing the award-winning Octopath Traveler series, it previously worked on Tenchu and Way of the Samurai, which are owned by FromSoftware and Spike Chunsoft, so by extension — Kadokawa. We’re not fully sure what’s in store for the Japanese dev, but whatever it is, we’re sure its fans won’t be disappointed.

“To strengthen the ability to create IP in games as part of our game business strategy, we have made ACQUIRE Corp. into a wholly owned subsidiary. By acquiring the company, which has produced million-seller hit titles, we expect to generate synergies with our existing game-related subsidiaries, strengthen our planning and development capabilities Groupwide, and enhance our lineup of console games.”
