Sony backtracks PSN requirement to play some PC games

Sony appears to have backtracked its PSN requirement in some of its PC games. It’s not clear the plans for those not listed.

On the PlayStation Blog, Sony shared plans to incentivize PSN linking while also dashing the outright requirement aspect of it. Frankly, it probably realized this hurt its bottom line and while inflated PSN numbers would look good, so would that extra amount of sales that PC gamers hellbent against using the service would foster, not to mention those who literally can’t get PSN.

At this moment, it appears to only affect the four games listed in the post — Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, God of War Ragnarok, The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered. These four will turn PSN linking into an optional thing with perks if you opt into linking your account. Content like early unlocks for Spidey suits or armor in God of War Ragnarok are examples.

At the time of writing, Ragnarok is still plastered with a requirement rather than an option. It’s also not clear if this means the games will return to regions where PSN is not an option. What we can say is this is a step in the right direction; PlayStation can succeed in the PC market and bolster sales enough to produce solid games for its core audience while double-dipping into the PC market to really get the big bucks.
