Square Enix confirms new projects for its mainline and spin-off series

Square Enix recently hosted a Dragon Quest presentation revolving around the celebration of the series’ 40th anniversary. Yosuke Saito, executive producer of Dragon Quest XII, and Yuji Horii, game designer, paired up to show their gratitude to the community supporting the franchise’s growth before revealing the upcoming new projects: Dragon Quest XII and Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World.

Dragon Quest XII Beyond Dreams is the most anticipated Dragon Quest game that was originally named Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate. Its development process wasn’t very straightforward and smooth since its first announcement, restarting its development while undergoing a new development team.

The new game introduces a new cast of characters who will interact with the protagonist, a young, brave hero who received strange visions in his dreams. Some of the confirmed characters include a girl who’s into engineering with her partnered robot and a warrior who enjoys relaxing and praise from an audience.

Its trailer presented a small peek of gameplay, which had the hero freely jump and sprint through the open world with monsters. It seems exploration has more freedom, letting the protagonist jump and roll from higher grounds without much concern for invisible walls in open areas, like in Dragon Quest XI. Dragon Quest XII currently has no release date due to its development issues, though the developers are pretty eager to share more details once the game is properly prepared to reveal more.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World was the presentation’s final announcement. The monster collectathon RPG focuses on a new journey with the leading duo from Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride, Bianca and Nera.

It’s currently planned to release for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and Steam. There isn’t a release date, though the Dragon Quest Team is preparing to give more updates closer to its official launch.
