Square Enix reveals its new reboot plan to incoporate AI in gaming business

Square Enix is emphasizing its efficiency and productivity for gaming development by implementing a three-year reboot plan. This decision will majorly shift the company’s structure, which will affect developer studios outside of Japan. The company is also continuing to support multiplatform releases to grow its desired franchises.

The reports show Square Enix is prioritizing the influence of AI productivity in Japan. The company is partnering with Matsuoโ€“Iwasawa Laboratory, the University of Tokyo, to incorporate Generative AI for 70% of debugging and QA tasks before 2028. This is the company’s solution for its current software schedule, especially its larger-scale games like the third entry of Final Fantasy VII Remake.

โ€œThrough the use of automation technology, aim to improve the efficiency of QA operations and establish a competitive advantage in game development.โ€

Since Square Enix is primarily focusing on changing business in Japan, the company is also readjusting its business in the West, like North America and the United Kingdom. The company’s rebooting plan involves compressing the business family to four primary business divisions, which results in many western studios being closed down. Any IP developed during the recent readjustments was integrated into its global business. Square Enix even responded to IGN about the tremendous business changes in Western nations.

โ€œWe are reorganizing our operations in North America and Europe to strengthen our development structure and to drive a globally integrated marketing strategy. This was an extremely difficult decision, made following careful consideration and analysis by our leadership, in order to best position the Groupโ€™s long-term growth. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the talented team members who will be departing the company for their significant contributions to Square Enix. During this period of transition, we remain committed to treating each individual with the utmost respect and providing extensive support throughout this process.โ€

The company also confirmed to continue its multiplatform strategy through simultaneous releases. The existing franchises have been growing from the latest games entering more gaming platforms like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Romancing Saga, and Octopath Traveler. This strategy also greatly benefits newer titles like The Adventures of Elliot and Killer Inn.

Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth is the only game confirmed to re-release on other platforms before other Square Enix games will primarily release on every eligible platform at the same time. The company’s current schedule confirms both new and large-scale games until the fiscal year 2028 quarter 3. More details for its upcoming releases will be unveiled closer to the official launch dates.
