Ubisoft’s new live service Skull and Bones has less than 1 million players, free trial included

It sounds like Ubisoft’s fumbled ship combat live service game, Skull and Bones, isn’t taking off as it hoped, with reportedly less than a million players, even accounting for the free trial players.

Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson reports that his sources claim the game is not taking off like the French developer had hoped. Allegedly, the game is sitting at around 850,000 players, which include those who are playing the game as part of its eight-hour free trial. While the player base is decently engaged, averaging “three and four hours a day,” it’s hard to say exactly what those numbers would be without that trial.

Unsurprisingly, a lot of this issue is pointed at the game’s lackluster gameplay and marketing, touting itself as a AAAA game while lacking anything that might make that lofty title feasible. Even employees were unsatisfied with the end product, especially for the price tag — $70 isn’t exactly a fair trade for the game offered here.

James reviewed Skull and Bones and said that it had “somewhat fun moment-to-moment gameplay, but a complete lack of anything else to keep the player interested past the first hours at launch.”

More Smash Jump: Kingdom Come: Deliverance is heading to the Switch, a new Borderlands truly is in development… and it seems to be the CEO’s favorite, and Epic Mickey is getting a new coat of paint.
