The widespread success and appeal of the Borderlands franchise cannot be understated — it is among the most high-valued IPs that Gearbox Software owns, and it seems the next mainline adventure is, indeed, in development. It isn’t ready to be formally announced yet, though.
Speaking to IGN about the upcoming movie, CEO Randy Pitchford was asked about his favorite installment of the franchise. Instead of staying safe with answering the question with an established title, he noted that his favorite is actually the next game Gearbox is working on. He’s even gone as far as saying that it’s “the best thing we’ve ever done.”
It’s worth pointing out that mounting evidence already pointed to a new entry, such as a former Gearbox contractor listing Borderlands 4 and Tiny Tina’s Wonderland 2 in their LinkedIn bio, as reported by PSX Extreme, back in November. Unlike the rest of the evidence, though, this is a lot closer to being straight from the horse’s mouth. By and large, he admitted “yeah, we’re working on a new Borderlands and it’s pretty sweet.”
We’re sure it’s still some ways away, but hopefully with Pitchford having enough ability to discuss it even broadly, we can hope for some sort of reveal this year or perhaps next year.
“Look, we haven’t even announced anything of it. Clearly, we’re working on something. And I know what we’re working on, and holy shit… It’s the greatest thing we’ve ever done. And I can’t wait, but it’s not time yet. It’s not time yet. There will be a time.”
