James Cameron isn’t making the Avatar movies for money

James Cameron has come forward, saying he isn’t making any more Avatar movies for the sake of money, but rather to appeal to humanity’s better instincts. But hey, both Avatar films remain among the most profitable movies out there.

Speaking with Rolling Stone (via IGN), Cameron discussed how he views Avatar as a “Trojan horse” where it’s entertaining and also “works on your brain and your heart a little bit in a way.” He asserts he hasn’t dedicated the past few decades to Avatar just for the money, either.

“I’ve justified making Avatar movies to myself for the last 20 years, not based on how much money we made, but on the basis that hopefully it can do some good, it can help connect us, it can help connect us to our lost aspect of ourself that connects with nature and respects nature and all those things. So do I think that movies are the answer to our human problems? No, I think they’re limited because people sometimes just want entertainment, and they don’t want to be challenged in that way. I think Avatar is a Trojan horse strategy that gets you into a piece of entertainment, but then works on your brain and your heart a little bit in a way.”

Avatar: Fire and Ash is the next entry to the anticipated film series, which is supposedly to release on December 19, with post-production work still being finalized. The fourth entry has already entered filming and is due out in 2029, and finally in the next decade, a fifth film will be released.
