CD Projekt Red does “not see a place” for microtransactions in single player games

Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red has taken a stance against game developers who implement microtransactions into single player experiences. This is on the heels of Dragon Dogma 2’s situation.

As spotted by JuiceHead (via VGC) on Twitter, CDPR CFO, PIotr Nielubowicz, touches on the topic in interview with Polish publication, StockWatch. Largely, it seems the Polish developer isn’t interested in following the trend and will keep its single player games free of the practice. That said, it won’t dismiss the idea of introducing it into future multiplayer projects.

This all comes after Capcom caught flack for introducing microtransactions into the single player experience of Dragon’s Dogma 2. The key with it, though, is that none of it is out of reach of the player in-game, so really while this might rub some people the wrong way, it’s not faced much backlash since the initial wave.

In the end, microtransactions have been a huge point of contention between developers and the player. Nowadays, it seems more and more developers are seeking to shovel out a lower quality product to fix later or just toss microtransactions in to make a couple extra bucks. As it doesn’t dismiss the idea in multiplayer projects, we can’t help but wonder what kind of projects CDPR might have in mind for such an occasion.
