The Switch is no stranger to fighters, even family-friendly ones, but Frosty Pop saw an opp and took it with its upcoming fighter, Pillow Champ. Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat are fun and all, but they are far from family-friendly, and with the Switch largely geared toward the family, it’s not hard to see why the developer saw a market potential.
Releasing next year, Pillow Champ has been dubbed “Street Fighter with pillows,” but while that might sound like a violent thing in and of itself, in-universe, the Pillow Champ League is actually what keeps the peace. War, poverty, and hunger have all declined thanks to the championship, as it gives the angry thoughts a safer frustration outlet.
The game will launch with two story modes, with more coming in the future, and will feature eight playable characters with their own style. Something that also sets it apart is the fact it’s able to be played with local multiplayer, something that’s a dying breed, or online. It also promises a bopping soundtrack.
Pillow Champ dev Frosty Pop was inspired by Splatoon to take a more “Nintendo approach” to the fighter genre, while also consulting fighting game players to ensure that it can interest and keep the attention of fighting game enthusiasts. At this time, all we know is the this niche pillow fighter will be released in Spring 2024.
