Nintendo released a Q&A summary of the Policy Corporate Management Briefing about the Nintendo Switch 2, including the company’s future support and perspective on the hardware’s performance. Nintendo executives like Shuntaro Furukawa and Shigeru Miyamoto answered several questions about the expectations for the latest Nintendo generation, especially for the new games.
During the business meeting, the Nintendo President responded to the question regarding the development and schedule for Nintendo Switch 2 software. The executives are aware of the growing expenses and longer development cycles for newer games, which is why the company is marketing Nintendo Switch 2’s backwards compatibility feature.
The large library of Nintendo Switch games gives the company enough room to implement the larger projects at the appropriate time. The latest release schedule doesn’t just incorporate new Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 games, but also new content for existing Nintendo Switch games like Kirby and The Forgotten Lands Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star Crossed World and Super Mario Party Jamboree + Jamboree TV. The company aims to support both consoles before primarily transitioning to the new console.
โSoftware development costs are higher and development periods are longer, making it more challenging to continue introducing new titles at a good pace. Nintendo Switch 2 can also play compatible Nintendo Switch software, so we would like to recommend Nintendo Switch software as well to consumers who are picking up a game console for the first time. With these considerations in mind, we believe we will be able to maintain the momentum of our Nintendo Switch 2 business by striking a good balance between introducing new titles and encouraging consumers to play evergreen titles over a long period of timeโ
Nintendo is ideally planning to satisfy both veteran Nintendo Switch fans and newer gamers for the upcoming generation. The Nintendo President expected Nintendo Switch 2 to be mainly presentable for Nintendo Switch fans, emphasizing the need to make the new console more welcoming and approachable to newer fans. New games aren’t the only plans to make the Nintendo Switch 2 approachable, but other entertainment methods like films and physical merchandise. The company is branching out more to physical media to influence newer players into the latest Nintendo gaming platform through its immersive, growing IPs.
โOur goal for Nintendo Switch 2 at launch was to leverage the high engagement with Nintendo Switch and encourage all existing Nintendo Switch owners to purchase the new system. Nintendo Switch 2 hardware unit sales have exceeded 10 million units as of the end of September 2025, but there is still a significant gap compared to the Nintendo Switch installed base of over 150 million units. Given that fact, for now we expect to remain in a phase where it is primarily existing Nintendo Switch owners who will purchase Nintendo Switch 2. But at the same time, we will work to convey the appeal of Nintendo Switch 2 to new consumers through the release of software titles and other means.โ
