Indie platformer Celeste has a free 3D spin-off now

Side-scrolling indie platformer, Celeste, is celebrating its sixth anniversary with a free 3D spin-off game available now. Dubbed Celeste 64: Fragments of the Mountain, it takes the charming 2D platformer into the third dimension and slaps a classic N64 coat of paint on it.

Celeste 64, showed off on Twitter, is free for all on Itch and, by its description, was only in development for around a week. The game itself features a fair bit of content for fans to dive into from a new perspective on the game’s mechanics, new music that really hammers in its N64 inspirations, bonus stages, and dialogue that takes place after the original 2D game’s story.

Gear up for the Celeste 6th Anniversary Challenge! 🗻

Celeste 64 isn’t even the first time Maddy Makes Games reenvisioned its flagship IP, back during its third anniversary, the dev decided to make a semi-sequel, Celeste 2: Lani’s Trek, which was built on Pico-8. This game wasn’t a sequel to the finished product, but rather to its original prototype.

This short, charming, fully-3D romp is available on both PC and Linux, with a Mac version in the works, too. That said, it seems more patching is needed, as MMG is working on addressing some glitches and crashing issues.

More Smash Jump: So, it was licensing that led to Spec Ops: The Line’s delisting, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League story content will be playable solo, CliffyB once pitched “medieval Pokemon,” and Palworld’s success only fueled his pitch’s validation.
